How to Avoid Pitching Generically

When asked about who their target audience is, a lot of new businesses make the mistake of saying something like, “Well, ANYONE can use my product/service, so my target audience is…everyone?” The problem with this mindset is that when you pitch your business so generically, it ends up being that you’re pitching to no one. So how do you fix it?

Narrowing down your target audience is a priority before you start selling. Have a target audience makes it easier to find your intended audience and tailor you message and branding to them.

For example:

If you are posting phrases like “Our Fitness program is the best in town. Join us for a healthier lifestyle.”

Try instead to post phrases like “Are you a busy mom looking to stay fit without sacrificing precious time with your family? Our fitness program is designed with you in mind. Discover convenient, quick workouts that fit seamlessly into your daily routine, helping you achieve your health goals while enjoying quality moments with your loved ones. Take the first step toward a healthier, balanced lifestyle today!”

Why this works:

In the first example, the sales pitch is generic and does address any specific audience needs or pain points. You may get seasoned gym pros and newbies coming and neither will be happy. In the second “after understanding the audience” example, the message is tailored to busy moms, acknowledging their challenges and offering a solution that aligns with their preferences and goals. This approach is more likely to resonate with the target audience, generate interest, and keep them coming back to you because you understand them.

You may be wondering if you can have more than one target audience, and the answer is yes- but you need to have different messaging for each audience. Think of it like parenting more than one kid. You probably have things you do or say that are the same for each of them. But a lot of parenting is tailoring your message about what you want to happen to each individual kid to achieve your desired result. So for you business, instead of getting each target audience to do something like go to bed (and stay in bed) you want them to buy from you.

So yeah, your product could be beneficial to a lot of people, but narrowing down your target audience and speaking directly to their pain points and offering a solution specifically for them will be more successful for you in the long run.
