Without Scalable Systems Sara Bendrick’s Landscaping Business Was In Trouble

Sara Bendrick is a designer, licensed contractor & T.V. Host for the DIY Network.  She has a bachelors in landscape architecture from Cal Poly SLO and when not filming ‘I Hate my Yard’ or her new series “Lawn & Order’  she runs a Landscape design/build company, ‘Sarita Landscape Design’.

Her landscaping business was doing ‘ok’. However, it was experiencing growth pains until she was able to implement scalable systems into the processes of her business. She used Jobber as software to help her business grow, issues invoices, connect team members and keep track of client jobs.

Sara loves the work of being a landscape designer. However, it was limited by her time. She was trading time for dollars.

When she became a licensed contractor, Sara was able to scale her business and serve more clients by hiring a team to help do more work.

Sara, explained to me that as her business grew there was a breaking point.

She could stay small and not grow and serve a limited number of customers.

OR she could grow and get help.

Her help came in the form of a project manager and contracted landscape and construction professionals and from software.

Landscaping and design can be a profitable business, with clients paying from $25,000 to $100,000 or more per project.

Sure, by doing just design work there was minimal overhead. It was just Sara, her computer and software.

By expanding and working with a team, although there is now more overhead, she can scale her business and have others help serve clients.

Marketing Tips

When Sara started out, she went door to door to find clients. That’s hustle.

As the business grew Sara was able to leverage the power of referrals and social media.

The power of social media is that oftentimes, when clients approach her for work, they’re already sold in working with her, due to her social media presence.

Video is a powerful way to grow your business, it personalizes and humanizes your brand.

Why Are You In Business

Towards the end of our discussion, Sara said something that I want you to remember.

By having a thriving and growing business she can focus her time on other things that make her happy, like TV production.

What is it that makes you happy?

What do you want to do with your time? Be sure your business is serving YOU not you a slave to your business.
