How my company came to life
I switched from corporate life to working as a freelancer thanks to my then-fiancé’s advice. He said I could earn a lot more than that $250 monthly paycheck, not to mention the freedom and flexibility. At twenty-something, the idea was music to ears.
As it turned out, the freelance world just hit the right note. I loved how I was able to work on different creative projects with a flexible schedule. When I moved to Chicago, my now-husband and I finally worked together to co-found our own agency, Chykalophia, in 2011. But the journey wasn’t all rainbows and butterflies.
How I struggled to keep my company going
Having a tech-savvy husband as a co-founder was a privilege, indeed, but a major challenge we had to tackle was our lack of digital marketing knowledge. During the couple of years of taking whatever available projects, I met with wonderful coaches and mentors. They played a huge part in helping me to learn digital marketing, redefine my company’s value propositions, identify my audience and, most importantly, determine my niche.
As my knowledge expanded and my company grew, the challenges thrown at me shifted, too. I set a sales target for my business but it was tough to hit the number. That’s something that I’m sure many of you have experienced. Over the course of this phase, I did anything and everything to achieve the target instead of focusing on things that really mattered, and the results were unsatisfactory.
Forever a student, I rolled up my sleeves and learned from various resources about how to grow my sales. Knowing my industry, I focused on understanding how to get my company website to produce more sales and I’m gonna share what I’ve learned with you.
When it comes to growing your business and getting more sales, many businesses overlook the asset they’ve got at their fingertips: their website. As business owners, we have to understand that our website’s more than just a pretty face. Businesses use employee performance reviews to measure human resources, right? You need to treat your website with the same level of scrutiny. But how do you ensure your website is actually pulling its weight?
How to get your website to produce more sales
Here are the three tips that I’ve practiced and helped my website produce more sales:
- Know your data
You can’t influence what you don’t measure.Integrate tools like Google Analytics to your website so you can track data like unique visitors, return visitors, traffic source, bounce rate, session duration, click-through rate, conversion rate, cost per sale/lead and most visited pages. Google Analytics’s free and relatively easy to use once you get the hang of it. - Test everything
A/B testing might seem costly and time-consuming, but those who do not test are just making guesses, and guesses are expensive. When you’re tracking your data and defining a specific business goal metric you’d like to see improve, you’re going to wanna test different solutions to see which one ultimately gets you the best results. Often, your website visitors will surprise you with their preferences. But you’d never know if you didn’t take the time to test and measure the results from the best options.
One easy example is that you might think that a big, red button calling visitors to “Start Free Trial” is a surefire win, but test it and you might find that visitors actually respond better to a friendly green one instead.
- Know who you’re targeting & what you’re selling
What are you selling? Who needs it? Do you understand your customers? Can you describe them in detail? Do you know what motivates them to buy?
Answering these five questions will help get your website to speak to exactly the right audience, and its ability to convert that visitor into a repeat buyer becomes that much more likely. On the contrary, if your offer’s vague and you’re selling a solution for everyone, it’s ultimately going to cost you a lot more money to convert sales through your website.
Without context, this foundational advice can seem pretty generic. You can find out more about how to apply these principles to turboboost sales through your website by getting on a call with Ari at Chykalophia.
