Small Businesses Build Communities

Join the Small Business Movement

As the holiday shopping season approaches, The Entrepreneur’s Source® encourages Americans to shop locally to support small-business owners striving to achieve the American dream of self-sufficiency and financial freedom.

American consumers spent an estimated $19.8 billion at independent retailers and restaurants on Small Business Saturday last year, up from $19.6 million in 2019. As the first holiday season following the pandemic outbreak, it was not surprising that online shopping at small businesses soared last year. At least 56 percent of shoppers made a purchase online, up from 43 percent in 2019.

Small businesses that took advantage of social media made a big impact in 2020. More than 50 percent of Americans who reported shopping small on Small Business Saturday said they supported a small business through social media by endorsing local shops or shopping at a small business because of a recommendation on social media.

Small Business Saturday is a tool for small business owners to ramp up sales during the busy holiday shopping season. Celebrated annually on the Saturday between Black Friday and Cyber Monday, Small Business Saturday was launched by American Express in 2010 to highlight small businesses that were struggling following the 2008 financial crisis. As the movement gained momentum, the Senate unanimously passed a resolution to support Small Business Saturday, and business associations, nonprofit trade groups, municipalities and public officials united to form a Small Business Saturday Coalition to promote the event. The campaign is helping people understand the positive impact small businesses have on their local community. In 2020, 97 percent of shoppers recognized the positive impact they can make by shopping small, American Express reported.

There are 31.7 small businesses in the United States, according to the U.S. Small Business Administration. Small businesses are creating jobs and services for local communities across the country. Small businesses accounted for 65.1 percent of net new jobs since 2000. The SBA, which is dedicated to helping Americans start, build and grow businesses, began co-sponsoring Small Business Saturday with American Express in 2011.
