Understand that there are ups and downs in life and business.
As an entrepreneur, Hannah knows that life isn’t all rainbows and roses – even if that’s the joy she brings to people through her work. You also have to worry about family, bills, and other pieces of life that are going on at the same time as your business.
She admits that a couple of times a month, she feels down and discouraged when things get tough. “When you’re an entrepreneur, you’re the only one that’s responsible for yourself. You’ve got no one getting you up in the morning, no one telling you you’re late for work…you’re responsible for so much.”
Working as a female entrepreneur
You have to have a strong mind and talk yourself out of giving up. Hannah recently had an interaction with someone that left her questioning everything she’s worked hard for. She considered quitting – even if only for a moment.
But then she remembered all of the positives and all of the ways she is making a difference in her community. Hannah encourages other entrepreneurs not to focus on the very few people trying to bring you down. Walk away from those people, businesses, and moments and focus on those who do support you.
Knowing why you’re doing what you’re doing
She shares that as an entrepreneur, you have to know what your “why” is. When you are grounded in your purpose, it’s easier to let go of negativity. That doesn’t mean you don’t have down moments.
There are always going to be bad days. Success isn’t made up of being happy or content. It’s made up of getting back up every time you fall down. The more you get back up, the more resilient you become.
Surround yourself with the right people
When you have the right people in your life, getting back up when you’re kicked down is easier. How do you know you have the right people in your life? Tell someone you’re having a bad day.
How do they respond? If someone is negative and tells you that maybe it’s time to give up and do something different, those aren’t your people. You want to have people in your life who encourage you and tell you to keep going. They remind you of all you’ve overcome and even help you brainstorm how to get through a storm.
About Hannah Perry
Hannah moved from England to the United States in 1999 to be an Au Pair because she had a passion for working with special needs children. While her role fulfilled one of her passions, she struggled to find space for her creativity. That’s when she opened an art studio called the Giggling Pig.
Hannah has been awarded three Stevie® Awards for her art studio, and in 2017 she was named the Gold Winner for Female Entrepreneur of the Year. She shares her joy with children and families, but she also shares the real, raw side of business with other entrepreneurs.
