Stress is no stranger in the business world. The way entrepreneurs handle their stress is totally subjective based on its nature and cause. This is why, as an entrepreneur, it is important to ensure you can identify the root cause of your stress because that is where the real work begins. With stress being one of the leading causes of mental health issues, it is not something that a person can ignore.
Stress can be induced by high levels of activity over a sustained period of time and is the body’s way of feeling under pressure. It can affect our mood and how we perceive certain things that are out of our control. With the various ongoing challenges presented when running your own business, prolonged stress is most certainly a commonality amongst entrepreneurs. The good news is there are an array of methods to combat stress in business.
Word Up
Identifying the root cause of your stress can be difficult if you have a lot on your plate and as an entrepreneur, this will not be the case. Take it back to basics and write down everything that comes to mind. More often than not, transferring what’s on your mind into a different medium or even saying it out loud can be a form of stress relief. Try journaling or a mind dump as a way to get your feelings down onto paper and even establish a to-do list of what to tackle first when it comes to what is causing you stress.
Writing down your thoughts can be exactly that, it doesn’t have to be an orchestrated piece of literature, but instead a stream of consciousness. With many of us working from home, you may find that some things triggering your stress in a real-life situation may seem more intense because of the mediums of communication you are relying on rather than body language.
Your Body is a Temple
Feeling prolonged stress does not affect just your mind but also your body and physical state. Engaging in some kind of movement and physical activity can clear your mind and is an excellent release of endorphins. Participating in exercise and physical activity is known to be in the daily workday of many entrepreneurs and is generally a good habit to get into. Exercising doesn’t have to be high-intensity cardio every day but could be a brisk walk to walk out your frustrations and anxieties.
If you have quite a sedentary lifestyle, try challenging yourself to get up and out of your chair every hour and away from your screen. Even if that means doing a quick lap of your space or literally stepping outside and taking in some fresh air, regular movement can be a great contributor to getting your stress levels down.
Be Grateful
When feeling stressed and overwhelmed, as an entrepreneur we can often forget everything about our achievements and constantly focus on the next thing that we need to do. So sometimes it’s good to take a minute and slow down and practice gratitude. You can do this in a multitude of ways. From noting down the things you are grateful for to taking a couple of minutes whilst you are in the shower to say out loud what you’re grateful for. This could be concluding the tasks you achieved the day before, or how you have checked off milestone goals for yourself within a matter of time. This is a minimal effort, big results practice and as entrepreneurs this formula only makes sense!
Outsourcing Does Not Equate to Weakness
Delegation as a business owner can be harder than it seems, having control of everything that you have invested in, is only a natural thing to do. Not doing so can result in stress and burnout, which is not good for you or your business. Outsourcing tasks that need to be done as your business grows is a natural part of entrepreneurship and an investment that will grant you back your time. Whether this is a virtual assistant or a part-time specialist, delegating where you can is a way of unburdening yourself and reducing your stress as you do so. By delegating tasks you are encouraging your creative side and can invest the time back into the reason you started the business in the first place.
These are just some of the methods you can use to reduce your stress as an entrepreneur. By making small changes in your life to get on top of your stressful situations may be what is standing between you and leveling up your business so it must be taken seriously.
