Exclusive Interview with Andy Young, founder of My Outsourced IT

Tell me a little about your background and how you ended up working on this project?

I provide computers to families, for free, to help them doing online learning from home. I discovered that some homes didn’t have a computer, tablet or anything that they could get online with. This is being digitally excluded. My parents died a few years ago. I took 5k that was given to me and bought as many laptops as I could and started giving them out for free through schools. The project grew from there and now through hardware donations I send out 20 computers a week to families in need. My background is in IT which enables me to fix or refurbish the computers as well as offering free repairs to families in need.

Why is is important to you and readers?

It is important to me because no child, family or struggling adults should be excluded from the digital world. A kid having to do homework on their mums phone shouldn’t be allowed. We as a society have loads of spare equipment just lying around which could be used for good. It’s good because it gives kids a fair chance of learning from home, recycles computers cutting down on carbon and is being green. By making it free it makes it available to everyone.

What are the biggest hurdles faced and how did you overcome them?

Getting the word out that this project exists has been very hard. How do you reach someone if they have no internet access or device to see you on? Fortunately with working with organisations such as social workers, councils and out reach programs the message gets there. If took time but is slowly working.

What are 3 tips you can share with our readers as it relates to your industry?

Green is the future whether we like it or not, paying it forward gives all people a fair chance and trust is important without it nothing will get done.
