A Guide to Medical Marijuana in Georgia

Medical Marijuana

Recently, cannabis legislation has been experiencing widespread support from voters across the United States. They showed their support by voting in favor of cannabis accessibility in several states, including New Jersey, Arizona, South Dakota, and Montana. In other states, the outcome of future elections will play a significant role in determining the fate of medical marijuana legislation. As more states legalize cannabis, more marijuana businesses will open and consultants will be in demand as these new businesses open. Here are a few more things you need to know about medical marijuana in Georgia.

Legislation

The state of Georgia has been known to have among the most stringent laws in matters concerning cannabis. However, the state passed legislation in April 2019, marginally expanding the medical marijuana program. Also known as the Low-THC Oil Registry, the law allows for the sale of low-THC oil and in-state cultivation of marijuana.

How to Apply for Medical Marijuana Card in Georgia

Though there is a general lack of registered medical marijuana dispensaries and doctors’ widespread unwillingness to be associated with cannabis due to historically stringent laws, getting a GA medical card is relatively simple.

Qualifying Groups

To be eligible, you must be an adult suffering from one or more of the qualifying conditions stipulated under the law. A legal guardian or caregiver of an adult is also eligible. Additionally, the state of Georgia allows guardians or parents of children with one or more qualifying conditions to hold medical marijuana cards.

Qualifying Conditions

According to legislation in Georgia, some of the qualifying conditions include:

  • Severe cancer (end-stage).
  • End-stage or severe Parkinson’sParkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis, and sickle cell disease.
  • Crohn’s and mitochondrial disease.
  • Autism, ALS, Tourette’s, and PTSD, among others.

The Process

To qualify, your doctor will assess and conclude if low-THC oil can benefit you. If you get approval, you will fill out a waiver form signed by both parties and a doctor’s certification form. These forms will remain in your doctor’s medical records, but you can request copies if you wish. Then, your doctor will send them to the Georgia Department of Public Health (DPH) electronically. After the state-run department reviews and approves your application, your information will be entered into their secure Low-THC Oil Registry, and a Low-THC Oil Registry Card will be generated for you.

The Cost

Your GA medical card is now ready for you to pick up from the Department of Public Health. It will set you back about 25 dollars, an amount you will pay annually during the renewal of your license. Within 15 business days, you will get a notification from the department’s Office of Vital Records informing you where and when your MMJ card is available. There are several public health offices around the state where you can conveniently pay and pick up your card.

How Much to Buy

After getting your MMJ card, Georgia state laws stipulate that you may possess a maximum of 20 fluid ounces of low-THC marijuana oil. Additionally, its THC content must not exceed five percent.
