2 Simple Dry Ice Ideas For The Spookiest Halloween This Year

Are you a Halloween enthusiast? Are you all in for a creepy and spooky Halloween this year? If your answers are yes and yes, then read on to get 2 simple but revolutionary dry ice NYC Halloween ideas.

But before we dive, safety first!

Dry ice is essentially solidified Carbon Dioxide at -109 degrees Fahrenheit, so it can be extremely dangerous if mishandled. It may cause cold burns and, when used in poorly ventilated rooms, cause suffocation. Always use heavy gloves and tongs when handling your dry ice and ensure that it doesn’t get in contact with your skin, eyes, mouth, or clothing. Most importantly, keep your dry ice out of reach of small children.

Now let’s dive in.

  1. A Dry-Ice Powered Mini Fog Machine

Do you want to make a non-toxic mini fog machine on a tight budget? It could be for your low-budget movie, a theater production at the local school or church, or in our case here, for a spooky Halloween party. When placed in hot water, Dry ice produces smoke that you can then fan out in different directions for an unbeatable spooky effect. Everything you need to make this machine is most likely available at your local big-box store.

What you need:

  • A plastic trash can or a 5-gallon bucket. Any waterproof plastic container would do.
  • Gloves and/or tongs, goggles, and any other protective equipment you find necessary
  • A PVC pipe with threads on one end (or a PVC Adapter), 2.5-inch diameter, and at least 6 inches long
  • A 9V Battery Snap and a 9V Battery
  • A computer fan (or a box fan if you want a big fog machine)
  • Dry ice
  • Hot water.
  • Hot glue
  • A razor/scissors/anything you can use for cutting

Procedure:

  • Cut a small hole at the center of the bucket (or trash can) lid. This is where you will attach the fan. Because you don’t want the fan to fall into the container, the hole should be slightly smaller than the fan.
  • If your fan came with screws, screw it on the lid- above the hole. If it didn’t, fix it using hot glue.
  • Cut a hole on one side of the container. This is where you will attach the outlet pipe. Make the hole just big enough for the pipe’s threads to screw and fit into.
  • Screw in the pipe and if need be, use hot glue to seal any possible leakages around the hole.
  • Attach the 9V battery to the 9V battery snap and connect it to the fan. The black wire from the snap connects to the black wire on the fan, and red connects to red.
  • Fill your bucket with hot water up to about ¾ full. You don’t want it to overflow.
  • Using tongs and/or gloves, carefully place a piece of dry ice in the hot water. Don’t drop the ice into the hot water for safety reasons.
  • Immediately put the bucket lid back on and switch on the fan.
  • Place the fan behind your Halloween decorations or at the entrance and enjoy the fog!
  1. Witches Brew with Floating Hand

This brew is dramatically beautiful, stunning, and has just the right amount of dark eerie to make your Halloween spooky and delicious.

What you need:

  • Lemon Lime Soda (about 2 liters)
  • Cranberry juice or lemon lime soda
  • Lime sherbert
  • Dry ice
  • Protective gear
  • A rubber glove
  • One cauldron and one bowl. The cauldron should be about 2 inches bigger (in diameter) than the bowl.
  • A big spoon.

Procedure:

  • Wash clean the rubber glove, turn it inside out, and put in your cranberry juice or lemon lime soda. Tie the top of the glove and put it in a freezer. Once completely frozen, it will form a nice fake hand.
  • Place your bowl inside the cauldron, leaving about an inch between the bowl and the cauldron’s wall.
  • Put sherbert into the bowl, one spoonful at a time.
  • Add lemon-lime soda to the sherbert. Stir gently until everything mixes up nicely. Sherbert has a tendency of rising to the top, so be sure to stir it at every serving.
  • Carefully place small pieces of dry ice in the cauldron such that they cover the 1-inch space on the outside of the bowl. Ensure that the dry ice doesn’t come into contact with the contents of the bowl.
  • Cut out the rubber glove to expose the frozen hand and then place the hand in the bowl (inside the Witches brew).
  • Create a fog effect by pouring hot water slowly into the cauldron. Don’t make the water too hot because the hotter it is, the more dry ice you will use. Add more hot water as the initial water cools.
